Barclays Review 2026

A strong, well-known bank — but for an EU saver the "Barclays" you deal with is the Irish-regulated EU entity, and it isn't a mass-market savings option.

Which Barclays are you dealing with?

Two licensed banks share the brand. Barclays Bank UK PLC is the UK high-street bank, while Barclays Bank Ireland PLC, based in Dublin, is the group's post-Brexit EU entity that passports its services across the EU/EEA.

Which one holds your account decides which protection scheme covers you — so it pays to check the entity on your paperwork.

Is your money safe?

It depends on the entity. UK deposits with Barclays Bank UK are covered by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000. EU deposits booked with Barclays Bank Ireland PLC are covered by the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to €100,000.

Both are solid, systemically important banks; the key is simply knowing which scheme applies to you.

Products & rates

In the UK, Barclays offers current accounts, instant-access savings, ISAs and fixed-rate bonds that pay interest at mainstream rates as listed (UK rates were trimmed through 2025).

In the EU, Barclays Bank Ireland focuses on corporate, investment and private/wealth banking rather than everyday retail savings — it doesn't market competitive mass-market deposit rates to ordinary EU savers. For rate-shopping, Barclays is largely a UK proposition or a private-banking relationship.

Fees

Standard UK accounts usually have no monthly fee on basic tiers; packaged accounts charge monthly, and non-sterling card use carries FX fees. EU private-bank pricing is relationship-based.

✓ Pros

  • Major, trusted, systemically important bank
  • EU entity gives Irish DGS €100,000 cover
  • Strong for corporate and private banking

× Cons

  • Not a mass-market EU retail savings option (public EU retail rates ~0%)
  • UK retail is a separate entity and scheme
  • Service reviews mixed — branch closures and app outages cited

Who it's for

UK residents wanting a full-service high-street bank, and — in the EU — corporates and private-banking clients rather than rate-seeking retail savers.

Bottom line

Reassuringly solid, but most EU savers won't find a competitive everyday savings rate here.

Frequently asked questions

EU deposits with Barclays Bank Ireland are covered by the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme up to €100,000; UK deposits use the FSCS (£85,000).
