Over Svenska Handelsbanken AB (publ), filialverksamheten i Finland
Svenska Handelsbanken AB (publ), filialverksamheten i Finland is the Finnish branch of the Swedish bank Svenska Handelsbanken AB (publ), operating in Finland as a branch rather than a separate legal entity. Historically it offered retail, private and corporate banking, including current accounts, payments, cards, mortgages, savings and investment services, and corporate lending, cash management and trade finance. The branch is subject to home-state prudential supervision by Finansinspektionen (Sweden) and host-state conduct oversight in Finland; deposits placed with the Finnish branch are protected by the Swedish deposit guarantee scheme administered by the Swedish National Debt Office up to the statutory limit (coverage applies per depositor across the Swedish entity), and applicable investor-compensation protections are also governed by Swedish schemes. Following a group strategic review, Handelsbanken decided to exit most Finnish retail operations, and during 2023–2024 the majority of Finnish retail customer relationships, mortgages, deposits and mutual funds were transferred to S-Bank, while a substantial share of SME/corporate relationships and selected branches moved to Oma Säästöpankki; certain specialized portfolios were sold to other Finnish institutions. As a result, the Finnish branch has been winding down or limiting new customer onboarding, and remaining services primarily relate to residual exposures and transition activities; existing clients should confirm with the bank or the acquiring institutions how migrations affect account details, product terms and access to services. Services have been provided in Finnish, Swedish and English and have supported SEPA payments and standard Finnish banking interfaces, though availability depends on the outcome of the transfers. Liabilities booked in Finland are obligations of Svenska Handelsbanken AB (publ), and the branch reflects the parent’s high investment-grade credit ratings from major agencies rather than a standalone rating. Customer complaints are handled by the bank’s internal process; Finnish customers can also seek guidance from FINE (the Finnish Financial Ombudsman), while deposit guarantee claims, if ever relevant, would be processed by the Swedish authority. Prospective or legacy customers should verify which entity currently holds their accounts or investments and which protection and terms apply.
