SMBC Bank EU AG is a German credit institution incorporated as an Aktiengesellschaft and headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, wholly owned by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation within the SMBC Group. Set up to provide a locally regulated platform for EU-based business following the UK’s exit from the EU, it operates under a German banking license and is subject to prudential and conduct oversight within the EU’s Single Supervisory Mechanism, with BaFin and the European Central Bank involved in supervision. The bank focuses on wholesale banking for corporate and institutional clients, offering services such as bilateral and syndicated lending, cash management, trade and export finance, project and structured finance, and risk management products including foreign exchange and interest rate derivatives, as well as access to debt capital markets in coordination with other SMBC Group entities. It uses EU passporting to serve clients through branches in selected member states and coordinates cross-border coverage with group offices where permitted. The institution does not target retail customers, and pricing is negotiated case by case. It publishes audited financial statements and Pillar 3 disclosures as required under CRR/CRD, and eligible deposits are protected by the German statutory deposit guarantee scheme (EdB) up to the legal limit per depositor; investment products and derivatives are not covered by deposit insurance.
