O BELFIUS BANK
Belfius Bank SA/NV is a Belgian state-owned bancassurer, created from the former Dexia Bank Belgium following the 2011 rescue and rebranded in 2012; it is owned by the Belgian state via SFPI/FPIM. The group serves retail customers, SMEs, corporates and the public sector, combining banking and insurance (via Belfius Insurance). Core products include current accounts, regulated savings accounts (with base rate and loyalty bonus as defined by Belgian law), term deposits, cards, consumer loans, mortgages, investments and pensions, as well as business lending, cash management and services for local authorities; certain financing services are provided through subsidiaries (e.g., leasing and factoring). Payment functionality covers SEPA transfers (including instant payments where available), international transfers via SWIFT and domestic schemes such as Bancontact; debit cards are typically co-badged with an international network (e.g., Mastercard or Visa), and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported on eligible devices. Account plans are packaged with monthly fees that vary by features; youth and student options exist, and fees apply to some cash services, foreign transactions and premium cards. Distribution combines a nationwide branch footprint with a widely used mobile and online platform, while Belgium’s ATM network is being reorganized through shared “Cash points,” so local cash access depends on location. Onboarding for residents can be completed digitally using eID/itsme; service is primarily in French and Dutch. Deposits are covered by Belgium’s statutory guarantee up to €100,000 per person per institution; investments and insurance have different risk and protection frameworks. Belfius is supervised by the National Bank of Belgium and the ECB and publishes regulatory disclosures on capital and liquidity. Terms, pricing and eligibility criteria are subject to change and depend on customer profile.
